Talking about teaching seminars
These seminars are a forum for discussion and debate on a wide range of topics and issues facing lecturers in Higher Education, such as:

meeting the diverse needs of students

re-designing the curriculum
integrating teaching and research -
understanding the student experience

the working lives of academics
working within and across subjects
'Talking about Teaching' seminars are led by colleagues from within the university or by invited external speakers. The format varies, from sharing work-in-progress to philosophical debate. We hope the style will always be informal, supportive, thought-provoking and informed by research - a space where we can address key issues and develop our academic practice.

We run five enquiry groups for staff who are interested in discussing and/or researching particular areas. The enquiry groups have a page on Community@Brighton. You will need to log on and apply to join if you are not already a member.

Nurturing and Enhancing Creativity and Innovation

Keynote speaker - Professor Ray Land – University of Strathclyde
This promises to be a lively, energetic, creative day (just what you need in the marking season!) where we can share research informed creative ideas and practices about our learning, teaching and assessment. Creativity lies at the heart of learning, culture and social engagement, everyday life, and professional practice, particularly at the University of Brighton and our broader community. It also informs the corporate plan and the learning and teaching strategy. On May 27th we are going to share research informed practice and ask and perhaps go some way to answer some fundamental questions such as:
- What do we mean by creativity in learning, teaching and assessment?
- How do we go about being creative in our practice? being imaginative, innovative, entrepreneurial?
- How does creativity express itself and differ in the disciplines?
- How can we support, nurture, enhance, nudge students into creative processes and practices?
We have some slots left for offers of sessions (up to 20 minutes, interactive) and World Cafe Slots (15 - 20 mins) - these can be practical or ideas to get people talking so please send offers and ideas to Gina Wisker.
Unfortunately numbers will need to be limited because of the space.
Researching with Integrity Conference
The conference includes:
- a keynote address by Bruce Macfarlane, Professor of Higher Education and author of ‘Researching with Integrity: the Ethics of Academic Enquiry’ (2009)
- dedicated parallel discussion groups chaired by colleagues with particular experience and expertise in the five aspects of research referred to above

a plenary session in which an invited panel (including Bruce Macfarlane) will discuss questions and concerns arising from parallel sessions
