The Big Draw

We are delighted to announce that the University's Big Draw @ Brighton which took place across the university during October has been awarded a Drawing Inspiration Award by the National Campaign for Drawing.

The award means that our event will be documented in the Drawing Inspiration good practice book published by the National Campaign for Drawing, and Brighton will also be represented at the Awards Ceremony on 12 March in London.

Thanks to everyone who took part in Big Draw workshops, introduced new drawing activities into your courses, or used one of the specially commissioned "Drawing a Day" giant folded sheets designed by Brighton graduate Luce Choules.

The Centre for Learning & Teaching held a one day event at the Creativity Centre on Friday 2nd May 2008 exploring the role of drawing in higher education and showcasing some of the drawing activities that have taken place on and off-line during the Big Draw. >>More

The Big Draw comes to Brighton...

Teams of staff from across the University took part in a lunchtime drawing tournament in the Cockcroft Creativity Centre, organised jointly by the Creativity Centre, Learning Technologies Group and the LearnHigher CETL (Centre of Excellence in Teaching and Learning). The drawing games offered staff a chance to get a different perspective on drawing, try some new technology and have  fun with their colleagues. The team from the Higher Education Academy Subject Centre, Art Design Media were overall winners.

This was just one of the many drawing activities taking place across the University throughout October 2007 as part of the BigDraw@Brighton, organised by LearnHigher in conjunction with the National Campaign for Drawing.

Pauline Ridley, Visual Practices coordinator for LearnHigher, said: “ We want the BigDraw@Brighton to raise awareness of drawing as a tool for learning and research in higher education.  All children love drawing, but many people have given up by the time they come to university – in many cases due to lack of confidence. Our ambition is to encourage everyone to rediscover drawing and to explore and share the role it can play in their own subject: improving  observation skills, reinforcing memory, generating and communicating ideas or mapping structures, as a research tool or  just a different perspective on experience.... the possibilities are endless!”

During October, visiting artists also ran drawing workshops for staff and students in engineering, geology, nursing, midwifery and the health professions.  Other courses have been sharing their everyday drawing activities through the Big Draw Community blog, which  also hosted the Big Scribble, devised by Katie Piatt of the Learning Technologies Group, in which participants created online doodles and entered them for a weekly prize.
