Legal Services
Legal Advice at the University
Legal Services is an in-house solicitor’s office for the University of Brighton. It advises Schools and Central Departments and liaises with external solicitors and other regulatory bodies as required. Legal Services is unable to give legal advice to staff or students on personal matters, save that as Commissioner for Oaths, certain documents can be sworn for staff and students.
Advice can be given on a wide range of issues affecting the University including the following:
- Student Complaints
- Handling OIA complaints
- Data Protection and Subject Access Requests
- “Fitness to Practise”
- Student Disciplinary cases
- Debt and Fee disputes
- Vetting and barring
- Litigation
- General legal advice
Legal Services Officer
The University’s Legal Services Officer is Andrew Wilson. Andrew is a practising solicitor who worked in private practice and previously as a Barrister before coming to the University. Andrew has specialised in Commercial Litigation and Dispute Resolution and most recently in Employment and Employee Relations, having worked as legal adviser to the Engineering Employers’ Federation for a number of years.
