Grant Support Scheme - deadlines for 2011-12

With the aim of improving success rates of grant applications to Research Councils, the university piloted this scheme to support Research Grant applications. The scheme will continue in 2011-12 and the monthly submission deadlines have been announced.

This event will highlight the wide range of research taking place across the university through the Research Poster Competition and formally launch the university’s Doctoral College.

Funder news (April 2012) - Important EPSRC announcement: Shaping capability: EPSRC’s research portfolio and Developing peer review to deliver the Strategic Plan. ESPRC have just published the relative funding trajectories and strategies for their entire portfolio. From April they will require all applicants to describe their proposals in the context of the portfolio.

  • Changes to AHRC’s Policy on Resubmissions and Grade Descriptors
  • EPSRC Announce Changes to Peer Review and Introduce “National Importance” Assessment Criterion

Funder news - Changes to AHRC Fellowship Scheme - a revised scheme will be open to applications from early January 2012
while the current scheme will close to new applications at 4pm on 17 October 2011.

Funder news - Changes to NERC Responsive Mode schemes The NERC Small Grants scheme will close following the 2011 September 2011 competition. Changes will also be applied to the Consortium Grants scheme.


FP7 Calls announced - The Commission has today (20th July) announced the next round of FP7 Calls for Proposals following the adoption of the 2012 Work Programmes. Calls cover the Cooperation, Ideas, People and Capacities Pillars. The total budget for calls is over EUR 7 billion.

Funder news:RCUK have announced changes to requests for equipment and the costs of social surveys on Research Council grants which takes effect from 1st May 2011. (May 2011)


Funder news: The ESRC now require an additional attachment, the ‘Data Management Plan’, for all bids or projects which will use and/or generate data. (April 2011)

  • Standard Grants: Practice-led and Applied Route
  • Standard Grants: Speculative Route
  • Knowledge Transfer Fellowship Scheme
  • Fellowships in the Creative and Performing Arts

The Follow on Funding Scheme is now given as a permanent scheme.


Funder News- EPSRC announce important changes to funding applications & changes to letters of support

Pathways to Impact - Guidance Now Available
In April 2009, the Research Councils introduced a requirement for impact plans to be included in research grant applications.  The university’s Research Strategy Committee subsequently commissioned the Impact Working Group to produce comprehensive guidance on how to write an impact plan. 

The guidance was written by Phil Ashworth (School of Environment and Technology) and Katharyn Lanaro (Research Office) and has just been revised to reflect the latest Research Council requirements and advice.
