The following are the details of the
Safety in the Laboratory and Research Seminar
'supporting safety and wellbeing in research'
held on 13 April 2012

The Health and Safety Department are delighted to host a ‘Safety in the Laboratory and Research’ Seminar.

The event is free to attend and will include several international speakers.

Presentations cover the laboratory safety programme at Princeton University as well as examining the recent and tragic incidents involving liquid nitrogen in the UK and a laboratory fire in the US. The forthcoming UK guidance document ‘Safety in Research’ is due out later this year and provides information on training  and accountability of staff undertaking or managing research activities.

The event provides an excellent professional development opportunity for staff working in laboratories and research environments, it supports the principle aims within the Research and Excellence Framework (REF) as well as furthering professionalism and knowledge exchange within laboratory teaching and research activities in higher education.

The US Chemical Safety Board investigation into major laboratory accidents at USA Universities- Supporting the sector

The American Council on Education (the university presidents’ group) charged CSHEMA and ACS (American Chemical Society) with creating reports and tools to help with risk assessment and the culture of safety in the lab.  CSHEMA put together a series of webinars and reports and a ACS task force is developing a white paper and risk assessment tool.

The Huxley Building is located on the Moulsecoomb site adjacent to the Moulsecoomb railway station. http://www.brighton.ac.uk/maps/moulsecoomb

Free parking is also available on-site. Please indicate parking requirement at time of booking.

Accommodation

For those attendees requiring accommodation the night before Brighton has a range of good value accommodation options adjacent to either the Brighton main railway station or in the picturesque town of Lewes, where there is also a direct rail service to the Moulsecoomb campus station.
