For certain activities health and safety training will be a mandatory requirement before commencing any hazardous activity.
Further information is contained within the Code of Practice Health and Safety Training.
A useful component in identifying staff training needs and competence is the completion, maintenance and monitoring of an individual staff safety training record.
Training needs
The organisational Health and Safety Training needs analysis for different staff categories is currently being revised.
Specific health and safety training needs are currently identified at School/Departmental level.
Some of the training courses get booked up quite quickly, especially the fire warden courses.
Please contact the health and safety department and specifiy if you would also like to be put on a waiting list for a particular course.

| Correct fixing of equipment to walls and ceilings |
This practical based technical seminar covers the selection, installation and testing of mechanical and bonded anchors used for fixing objects to ceilings and walls. It aims to reduce the likelihood of fixings failing due to the poor selection of anchors and/or incorrect installation technique which in turn can lead to shelves, screens, projectors or other objects collapsing or falling.
Would benefit: Staff who directly fix into building fabric or those engaging contractors to undertake fixings, e.g. Surveyors, Building Maintenance staff, Information Services staff, Gallery technicians. |

Abrasive wheels can cause significant injury to operators and those present in the working area. Attendance on this course reduces the likelihood of injury from toxic dust/fume, high speed particles, vibration, noise and fire. Training to change or fit an abrasive wheel is a legal requirement under the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998.
Would benefit: Staff using or supervising the use of angle grinders, disc cutters, bench grinders, chop saws, clipper saws, petrol cut-off saws. |

| Managing Disabled Evacuation |
Examine the principles applicable to the safe evacuation of disabled persons during an emergency. Attendees will gain an understanding of their role and responsibilities in accordance with the University Code of Practice on Fire Safety Management and an appreciation of the proactive approach to Personal Emergency Evacuation Plans (PEEPs) for staff and students with mobility difficulties. This course concentrates on the Management of Disabled Evacuation and is not a hands-on, practical course.

| Risk Assessments Made Easy |
Provides staff with the knowledge and skills requiried to ensure that they carry out effective risk assessment, identify hazards and risks, apply the hierarchy for implementing control measures and know how to record the findings of the assessment.
