Chaplaincy
The university Chaplaincy’s primary aim is to offer pastoral care and support to all students and staff, irrespective of faith. From our own particular religious perspectives we aim to contribute as effectively as possible to every aspect of university life by operating as a symbol and source of hope, light and growth within the community.
Details of all upcoming Claplaincy events - including opportunities for worship, pilgrimage, choir and knitting can be found on the Chaplaincy Student Calender
Pastoral care
Chaplaincy staff are here to support you with help and advice in whatever way is most needed – socially, academically and spiritually – to help you feel comfortable during your time at university. Students are encouraged to make contact with the team to discuss how we can help

Lectures and discussion groups
The Chaplaincy regularly organises lectures and discussion groups on a range of current affairs and moral issues. These sessions offer a chance to express and
develop your own opinions, as well as being a forum for interfaith discussion and the exchange of ideas. Events are often held as a joint venture between the University of Brighton and University of Sussex chaplaincies.
Social groups
The main focus of the Chaplaincy Steam Society is to support new students and to help them settle into their ‘new life’ at university. If you are looking for company or an opportunity to get involved with local community activities, you can contact members of the Steam Society on 01273 642955.
The Chaplaincy works closely with the Students’ Union’s faith-based societies. For more information visit:

Community outreach programmes
The St Vincent de Paul Society provides you with opportunities to get involved with the local outreach agencies in the community. These include care for the
homeless in Brighton (soup run), local charity shops, Age Concern and other worthy causes. There is also the chance to work in a supportive role with pupils and staff in a local special school.
Pilgrimages, retreats and excursions
The Chaplaincy arranges a number of successful pilgrimages and retreats, such as those to the ecumenical community of Taizé in France, a retreat to Worthy Abbey, and to Walsingham in Norfolk. Students are invited to participate in these events, which offer a fun opportunity for prayer, discussion and exploration. We hope to plan similar events, including weekend excursions, in the future. For further information please contact the coordinating chaplain.
The university community choir
The choir meets at Steam House at 1.15 pm on Mondays and is open to students and staff of all musical abilities.
Please contact Fiona Childs on 01273 643384 or email f.j.childs@brighton.ac.uk for more information.
Knitting and Nattering
An opportunity for students and staff to join one of the most popular ‘credit crunch’ pursuits and use craft as a universal language to socialise and break down barriers.
Details of Knitting and Nattering is available in the Chaplaincy Student Calender
