Counselling and Wellbeing
The Counselling and Wellbeing team provide a range of support and services for students.
Counselling
The counselling service can provide a safe, confidential
environment for students to discuss concerns.
Experienced, qualified counsellors offer a space
to reflect and discover options and possibilities, and
advise about coping strategies. This service is free to
all University of Brighton students. For more information see the student life website
Students can self refer to this service, though we find that most users are refered by staff members. If you refer a student to us, we will not be able to confirm attendance without the students agreement.
Support at Peak Times - We usually find that from week 6 of each academic year, the demand for Counselling rises and we start to see waiting lists develop. Whilst we do try to manage this, see also our suggestions for support for students at peak times.
Wellbeing
Curriculum Development Workers are working with a range of staff on a range of wellbeing initiatives across the university. Activity includes:
- Increasing awareness and de-stigmatising mental health difficulties
- Mental wellbeing, managing stress and anxiety, healthy eating, time management
- Partnership working with external organisations including the Depression Alliance Charity, and internal activities including the Student Union Peer-2- Pier mentoring, Health Promoting University
- Working with Peer2Pier - Student Union volunteer scheme for students to get involved in health promotion and wellbeing campaigns for students.
- Transform your Life - a programme of information and activities to develop and stimulate employability skills by building confidence and motivation, and improving communication skills.

Health
The university provides access to a range of health advice
and support for students during their studies. These include
on-site medical services (Eastbourne and Moulsecoomb),
vaccination advice, support and information on sexual
health, drugs and alcohol. The health services listed here are largely run independently, however they sit administratively within Student Services.
Health Website for Students - includes information on registering with a doctor and information about Measles, Mumps and Meningitis. Staff may find it useful to display the MMR poster we have produced.
Vaccinations
The Health Protection Agency (HPA) recommends that
all students, irrespective of age, are vaccinated against
Meningitis C before arriving at university. Students who
have not had Mumps are advised to have two Measles,
Mumps and Rubella (MMR) vaccinations prior to arriving
at university or as soon after as possible.
For
more information about Mumps and Meningitis, including
the symptoms to look for and what to do, please see our
website www.brighton.ac.uk/studentlife/health
