Health

The university provides access to a range of health advice and support for students during their studies. These include
on-site medical services (Eastbourne and Moulsecoomb), vaccination advice, support and information on sexual
health, drugs and alcohol.

The University of Brighton is currently working towards becoming a Health Promoting University. If you’d like to know more, get involved, or have any ideas for us then let us know: www.brighton.ac.uk/hpu.

The health services listed here are largely run independently, however they sit administratively within Student Services and are managed as part of the Counselling and Wellbeing service.

Registering with a doctor

We recommend that all students register with a GP surgery close to where you live, as soon as possible.

Local services with availability can be found by searching www.nhsdirect.nhs.uk/localservices.

Students who need access to healtcare during vacations (eg if they are visiting home) should not re-register with their home GP but fill in a temporary residents form.

Onsite GP surgeries

The university has two on-site surgeries - both or which are run by local GP's:

Eastbourne - Trevin Towers, Gaudick Road, Eastbourne, BN20 7SP. 01273 644447 or 01323 410088

Doctors are available Monday–Thursday (term time only), and the nurse is available Monday–Friday (please check availability during vacations).

This surgery is run by staff from Enys Road Surgery, 5–7 Enys Road, Eastbourne, BN21 2GD, telephone 01323 410088.

Moulsecoomb - Ground floor, Cockcroft Building, Lewes Road, Brighton, BN2 4GJ. 01273 642864
The surgery is open for making appointments from 8.30am–12pm, Monday–Friday (term time only). Appointments can be booked with a doctor or a nurse. (Some same-day appointments are available – phone at 8.30am.)

This surgery is run by staff from Stanford Medical Centre, 175 Preston Road, Brighton, 01273 506361.

Dentists

In most instances, it is best for students to stay registered with their family dentist and arrange appointments during vacations, as there are no dental facilities available on any university site.

Students who do need to register with a local dentist, you can find one at www.nhsdirect.nhs.uk/localservices or telephone the East Sussex dental helpline 01273 403546 or NHS Direct 0845 4647.

In a dental emergency, Brighton students should contact Lewes Emergency Dental Clinic on 01273 486444.
Eastbourne-based students should contact Hailsham Dental Clinic on 01323 449170.

Vaccinations

The Health Protection Agency (HPA) recommends that all students, irrespective of age, are vaccinated against
Meningitis C before arriving at university. Students who have not had Mumps are advised to have two Measles,
Mumps and Rubella (MMR) vaccinations prior to arriving at university or as soon after as possible.

All doctors are able to administer the MMR - however students should go to the surgery at which they are registered.

Students on some courses, for example health care, may require additional vaccinations such as Hepatitis B, BCG
and Varicella. You will be notified if this applies to you.

For more information about Mumps and Meningitis, including the symptoms to look for and what to do, please see our
website www.brighton.ac.uk/studentlife/health
