Sources of additional funding

There are a number of additional funds to help students in certain circumstances.

  • Access to Learning Fund (ALF): This is a government fund to help students who need extra financial support because they have high costs. Any award is non-repayable. The fund is open throughout the academic year for UK full time undergraduate students experiencing financial hardship, and through the summer months for those students who are unable to work because of ill health or disability, caring responsibilities or because they have resits. Quick link to the ALF application form.
  • Emergency bridging loans: These are small crisis loans of either £50 or £100 for students who need cash to support themselves during a temporary unavoidable crisis, such as a delay in wages or funding. These are loans and students will remain in debt to the university until they are repaid.
  • University of Brighton bursary: We can provide you with information on the university’s bursary system. Eligibility for these awards is assessed automatically
  • Visit the main university Money pages for information on student fees and funding

Student Finance Survey 2010 (with Social Science and Policy Research Centre and the School of Applied Social Science) The survey was conducted annually from 1992 and on a biennial basis since 2008. This research has built up a comprehensive picture of how the financial circumstances of students have changed since the introduction of student loans in 1990 and tuition fees in 1998. The report is now available to download from www.brighton.ac.uk/sass/research/publications/
