The Telecommunications Department

Estate and Facilities Management

Top Links:

The university operates an Ericsson MD110 PABX, a type which is distributed across our five main sites and linked to a main group switch by leased lines and fibre-optic cables. The installation is one of the largest of its type in the south of England. We have in the region of over 2,500 extensions, and 50 incoming lines including Direct Dialling In (DDI) capability.

The telecommunications department falls under the remit of Estate & Facilities Management and as such provides the university with all its telephony requirements which encompasses both fixed line and mobile communications.

We are a small but perfectly formed team, based in Watts Building and we facilitate all telephony requirements throughout the university. We also provide a welcoming voice and professional service to callers to the university by way of our switchboard team.

Advice on the use of telephones and related equipment e.g. faxes, answering machines, pagers and mobile telephones, is available through the Telephone Systems Manager’s Office who should be contacted before any purchases of equipment are made. Advice can be offered on compatibility with current university systems; that new equipment is fully approved; and on other technical considerations and costs.
