Telephone User Guide - Tone Samples

This is a collection of the sound signals associated with normal phone operation. They were created to represent those generated by the university's Ericsson MD110 exchange. While some of the tones may repeat a little faster than they do in the real world - they should be accurate enough to be useful. Most of these sounds are set to run continuously (the exceptions are Dial Tone and Unobtainable) so you will need to use the stop button provided by your browser.

These sounds might not play with your combination of computer, browser and plug-ins.

Internal ring Announces a call placed from one of our extensions.
External ring Announces a call incoming from the public network.
Callback ring Announces a callback has been activated and will place the call AFTER you pick up your receiver.
Confirmation Confirms acceptance of a keyed command, e.g. callback.
Dial tone Tone heard when a line is ready to accept dialing.
Ring tone Tone heard when the remote phone should be ringing (Note that their bell might be off...)
Busy tone Tone heard when the remote phone is in use ("engaged").
Equipment busy Tone heard if there are no lines currently available to the remote phone.
Diverted Tells that calls to this phone are being diverted. Confirms a follow-me, explains why the phone hasn't rung...
Call waiting Announces an incoming (external) call is waiting. Also breaks modem connections!
Conference Periodic tone warning that there are more than two parties involved in the call.
Unobtainable Tone heard when there is a fault condition or the dialed number is not allocated.
