Bicycle Users' Group (BUG)

  • obviously, use bike lights at night
  • wear a cycle helmet - it could make all the difference
  • wear brightly coloured or reflective clothing. Sometimes drivers need you to help them see you
  • watch out for vehicles parked in cycle lanes, or crossing cycle lanes. Buses sometimes don't give cyclists enough space. Always check behind you before pulling out!
  • maintain your bike properly / get it regularly serviced at a good outlet - a badly maintained bike can land you in a nasty accident. Haynes Bike Book is a great guide for how to clean and maintain your bike.

  • don't cycle too quickly where it's not appropriate. Cyclists get a lot of unfair flak from pedestrians who stray into cycle lanes; still, they need time to get out of the way!
  • cycling through red lights is obviously illegal - and anyway, if you stop you can have a breather!
  • try to avoid rush-hour traffic if you can - Brighton, for example, can be very polluted and hectic in some areas such as the Lewes Road
